the cracow ghetto pharmacy by Tadeusz Pankiewicz
The history of the Krakow ghetto told by a Polish pharmacist
Tadeusz Pankiewicz, looking at the tragedy of the Krakow Jews taking place under the windows of the pharmacy, saved them from oblivion - he faithfully wrote down the history of the ghetto.
The book was first published in 1947.
Tadeusz Pankiewicz worked and lived for two and a half years in the ghetto. He experienced all stages of its existence: from the closing of the gates and the first harassment, through the displacements, increasingly dangerous and cruelly carried out, to its complete liquidation. During this time, the pharmacy "Pod Orłem" played - in addition to its normal functions, which gradually diminished over time - the role of a refuge and a contact point for two worlds: the Jewish population enclosed within the walls and the "free" one, living outside them; its staff became a link between these two worlds. Here one could read the latest news from the front, familiarize oneself with the content of the underground press, find shelter during night arrests. Here, letters and parcels were left for people living on the Aryan side, and messages and parcels were also received from them.
Those few residents of the ghetto who managed to survive the cruel time of war have retained the "Pod Orłem" pharmacy and its owner in grateful memory to this day. - goodreads
