Part-Time Library Assistant Job Description

Evelyn Goldberg Briggs Memorial Library seeks an enthusiastic Library Assistant to join our Public Services team. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with the public and is skilled in customer services, problem-solving, and technology. This individual should be flexible, team-oriented, and truly passionate about serving the community. This position is part-time, working on average 10 hours per week. This includes one evening and weekend hours on rotation.

Provides outstanding customer service to maintain the smooth and orderly operation of library collections and services. Provides basic clerical support. Requires a high level of public contact, strong multi-tasking abilities, and has opportunities to assist or lead on various projects. To ensure success, the employee will uphold the established core competencies of communication/customer service, professionalism/leadership, productivity/teamwork/attendance, job knowledge and following polices are procedures.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Customer Service/Clerical: Provides direct or indirect assistance to customers; provides routine and administrative tasks

  • Delivers excellent customer service to patrons in person, over the phone, and/or via email; striving for interactions that are accurate, thorough, timely and personalized

  • Demonstrates a broad knowledge of library collections, services and resources, both in person and online

  • Capitalizes on opportunities to promote and upsell services to patrons, including, but not limited to, programs, online databases, collections, etc.

  • Provides reader’s advisory services

  • Provides customers with basic technology assistance, including, but not limited to, computer use (hardware and software), printing, mobile devices, and other office equipment.

  • Provides limited research and genealogy assistance.

  • Utilizes the cash register

  • Enforces the library’s policies and procedures and works to support safety and security of the library building and grounds

  • SPECIAL PROJECTS: Participates in secondary duties and professional development opportunities

  • Assists in developing and implementation of library programming

 

Qualifications:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Preferred: Three to five years related experience; associate’s degree

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to represent the library in a responsible, professional, and trustworthy manner

  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment

  • Ability to maintain a calm demeanor under stressful or unsettling circumstances

  • Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions

  • Ability to work efficiently while paying close attention to detail

  • Ability to assess users’ needs and provide assistance

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with staff and the public

  • Ability to meet the flexible scheduling needs of the library

  • General mathematics skills

  • Basic general computer skills, including keyboarding, word processing, and email

  • Ability to use library and general office equipment, including computer, printer, photocopies, and telephone

  • Lifting and carrying; 50 pounds or less

  • Handling: processing, picking up and shelving books

  • Pushing and pulling: objects weighing 60-80 pounds on wheels
